Bargain Hunting with the New Samsung S5560 Marvel

As 2009 nears its ends, Samsung seems to cap its releases with a new set of touchscreen handsets like the S5230 and S5600.  Launched for release this November is another touchscreen, the Samsung S5560 Marvel. Sporting a slim profile on a light 95g body, the new handset is not only very pocket-friendly, it’s also wonderfully priced to make a great gift idea this Christmas.

You can start pre-ordering it from Orange at a mere ?30 on a 12 month deal.  It’s got some high end features, particularly in the imaging department, but it comes at the expense of not getting 3G so it can’t give users a wonderful net surfing experience. But the rest of the specs can give the competition a run for the money.

Competitive Features

The S5560 handset is a mix bag of excellence and mediocrity that can appeal or alienate mobile phones users.  It doesn’t aim to please all, for sure. And with its very affordable price tag, the excellent features give the S5660 its edge over some of the all-around mobile phones in the market while its less endowed features put it just right within its price range

The handset is a quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE on the 2 G network.  There’s no 3G or high speed data connectivity so you can forget about using this as a high speed internet phone except in hotspot location.  It does have WiFi 802.11 b/g for that as well as Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR for local data connectivity. Accelerometer sensor for automatic viewing orientation at the tilt of the handset is par for the course. . Imaging is supported by a top class 5.0 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash that support smile and blink detection as well as image stabilization.  This is certainly the handset’s strong point. You get 9.5 hours of talk time and 620 hours on standby on a single charge form its Lithium-ion batter. Its multimedia features start with a competent media player that supports all the popular photo, music and video file formats out there. It has stereo FM radio with RDS and Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP for using wireless stereo headsets.  It also comes with an industry standard 3.5mm headphone jack You get 78 MB internal memory that can be expanded up to 16 GB from its micro SD slot.

Conclusion

There may be some confusion on what market Samsung is targeting with this handset but it is clear the Samsung S5560 not meant to be a high end mobile versatile mobile phone. Its imaging feature can give high end handsets real competition if you want a 5 megapixel camera at a budget price.  Samsung could have done better and not waste a 3” TFT panel with just 256k color depth.  The absence of 3G could be compensated with its WiFi feature but when just about all good handsets are on 3G and high speed HSPA data connectivity, you wonder what Samsung is thinking.
